A chat with Mr. Richard

Orlando Sentinel - Rebecca Swain Vadnie, June 9, 2006

Songs about tummy talk, underwear and skunks on Old MacDonald's farm? What kind of concert is this?

It's a Mr. Richard concert, that's what.

On one Saturday morning at a local bookstore, Mr. Richard--aka Richard Peeples--captivated a rambunctious group of kids and channeled that energy into grooving out and singing along to fun, rocking songs.

Q: When did you first start making music for children?

A: When I was a storyteller at the Orlando Public Library and performing traditional children's songs, I made the bus go really fast and get pulled over by the cops in "Wheels On The Bus", or put dinosaurs and skunks on Old MacDonald's farm. Then I took the blasphemous step of changing lyrics to Raffi tunes to make them more humorous, which naturally led me to writing my own songs for kids.

Q: Your music is pretty distinctive--how would you describe the vibe or feel of your songs?

A: Eclectically whimsical.

Q: What is one thing your audience would be surprised to know about you?

A: That I was raised by a feral pack of Boston Terriers.

Q: What was the first album you remember buying for yourself?

A: That Beatles double album ("1962-1966") with the red cover. That was the record where my ears first separated all the instruments in my head, and I realized that music is magical.

Q: When you're not performing, what else do you enjoy doing?

A: Photography, biking, listening to music, and I like to play my ukulele while waiting for the light to turn green.
